Olive wood Holy Land pendant.
The fish symbol in our Holy Land pendants.
One of the oldest Christian symbols is the fish. It was used by early Christians to identify themselves, often in time of persecution. The fish symbol is often found in the Roman catacombs, secret meeting places of the early Christians, persecuted by Romans for their faith.
The fish symbol is based on the acrostic, the initial letters of the Greek words for Jesus Christ. To understand the the fish symbol, it is crucial to know the meaning of the acronym.
The Greek word for "fish" is ICHTHUS. The acronym is Iesous CHristos THeou Uios Soter, which translates as"Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior". Christ also reffered to his apostles as "Fishers of Men" while the early Christian fathers called the faithful "pisculi"- fish.
